Dedicated Resize Viewport option

Eugene Janusov 4 years ago • updated by Ionuț Botizan 4 years ago 2

Currently, in the resolution preset options, Screen Type has two roles:

  • It allows the user to indicate “purpose” of each preset and then more easily distinguish presets in the list by the icon.
  • But also “Mobile device” screen type has a special meaning: the window will be resized in such a way that the given dimensions will be the width and height of the viewport, not of the window itself.

Whereas I follow the logic of such implementation, it isn't always convenient, in my opinion.

Firstly, despite the note at the bottom of the window and the explanation on the extension's overview page, the special role of “Mobile” type might not be immediately noticeable and obvious for the user.

Secondly, the viewport size can be important for different reasons, and not only for mobile testing. Due to the purposes for which I use the extension, most part of the time I need to change only the viewport size, whilst the resolutions I use are “desktop” resolutions and not related to “mobile” at all. As the result, I have five presets with the cellphone icon. This is not a major issue, but a bit irritating.

I would propose to add a dedicated “Resize Viewport” checkbox. That is how it was implemented years ago in Web Developer extension for Firefox. Unfortunately, the same extension for Chrome doesn't provide such an option at all.

You are right! That design decision was made a few years ago and I realize now it's not the best way I could've handle it. That will change pretty soon.

Thank you for your feedback!

UPDATE: Added different settings entries for resize target (window|viewport) and device icon in v.1.8.0

Cool, thanks!

I think you now can remove the message on the bottom of the Presets tab in the settings.

You're right! I completely forgot about that! :)
